Yee Peng is an ancient tradition from the Lanna Kingdom era where everyone would pay respects and make offerings to the Buddha in various temples. The word “Yee Peng” is a Lanna term, separated into two parts: “Yee” means the second month, or November as people in the Lanna region refer to it, and “Peng” refers to the full moon.

Yee Peng, also known as the Lantern Festival, involves the release of thousands of lanterns into the night sky, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of light and color. There are various beliefs associated with the Yee Peng tradition and the sky lanterns. One belief is that it’s a way to worship the Goddess of the Ganges River who provides water for agriculture. Many locals also believe that releasing these lanterns helps to ward off bad luck and negative energy.

Loy Krathong, on the other hand, is centered around the floating of small rafts made of banana leaves, decorated with flowers, candles, and incense. These rafts, known as krathongs, are placed on bodies of water to symbolize the release of negative emotions and the seeking of blessings.

Both festivals are deeply rooted in Thai culture and offer a unique and unforgettable experience and creates a truly magical atmosphere, with the sky filled with lanterns and the water adorned with floating krathongs.

Don’t miss the magical Chiang Mai Magical Lantern Yee Peng and Loy Krathong Festival on November 15-16, 2024! Immerse yourself in the enchanting spectacle of thousands of lanterns illuminating the night sky and floating krathongs adorning the waterways. Enjoy traditional Thai dances, music, and delicious food, making it a must-see event for any visitor to Chiang Mai.

The Phi Ta Khon Procession is a festival held in Dan Sai District, Loei Province, Northeast of Thailand. The festival falls on the 7th lunar month every year, the dates being selected annually by the town’s mediums. Because the Phi Ta Khon festival is a big merit-making festival, also known as the Bun Luang festival, there was a Mahachat sermon, a merit-making ceremony for Phra That Sri Song Rak, and various merit-making events combined together, therefore, the event is organised for at least 3 days.

During the festival, there is a procession of Phi Ta Khon, dressed like a ghost and a demon, wearing a unique large mask with different beautiful patterns. They play and dance happily in the procession that parades through the streets.

It is said that the Phi Ta Khon is a festival that was influenced by the Maha Vessantara Jataka, one of the Buddha his past lives. A story about when Vessantara and Phra Nang Mattree were leaving the forest to return to the city, during that time, many of the forest’s spiritual beings and various wild animals mourned, so they disguised themselves as parades and came with the villagers to send both of them back to the city.

The first day of the Phi Ta Khon festival is called Ruam Day (Gathering Day), where there will be a ceremony to release Phra Upakhut in the area between the Mun River and the Sog River. On the second day of the festival, there will be a fireball or bamboo rocket worshipping ceremony along with a variety of costumes, including a dance competition as well as a Phi Ta Khon parade. The third day is a combination of various traditional merit-making events of the year coming together in the Bun Luang festival. People will come to temple and listen to the 13 Kanth Mahachat sermons of the Lord Buddha recited at Phon Chai Temple to create merit and auspiciousness in their lives.
